  • Spirulina – The World’s First Superfood

Spirulina, the scientific name for a particular kind of blue-green algae, has been all the rage in Spirulina Powderthe supplement world for a number of years now.  Its powerful health benefits and potent nutritional value quickly earned it the label of the world’s first “Superfood”.  Let’s take a look at what makes it so special:

    Spirulina Benefits

Spirulina has a wide variety of properties which make it an incredibly beneficial substance to ingest on a regular basis.  It is perhaps the most nutritious food on Earth, on a gram for gram basis; it contains more protein than red meat or chicken, all the essential amino acids necessary for life, and an almost bewildering variety of vitamins and minerals.

    Spirulina Side Effects

Spirulina has been proven to be completely safe, effective, and digestible; there are virtually no known-side effects of taking it as a supplement.  It does contain natural iodine however, so if you are allergic to that substance please consult your physician before taking this supplement.

    Spirulina Health Benefits

There are also numerous health conditions that taking spirulina can help address.  It is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substance, it helps lower ‘bad’ cholesterol while raising ‘good’ cholesterol, reduces blood pressure, improves muscle strength and endurance, helps treat anemia, and may even help prevent the development of some forms of cancer.

    Spirulina Weight Loss

Your body typically creates the sensation of hunger when it feels that you need to consume more nutrients.  By adding this supplement to your diet program, you will feel hunger cravings significantly less often, as spirulina is such a dense source of fatty acids, proteins, and other crucial nutrients.  This makes it much easier to reliably stick to your regular diet and exercise program, which will ultimately result in significant weight loss.

As you can see, the regular consumption of spirulina supplements has an enormous number of potential health benefits.  While you should always consult with your physician before making any change to your diet or exercise program, you’ll definitely want to consider adding this fantastic, all-natural superfood to your daily health regimen.

  • Vitamin D Awareness Week 2015 - 2016

We have written about vitamin D and the benefits of vitamin D in previous articles, however, with vitamin D awareness week fast approaching and the importance of vitamin D it is a subject worthy of revisiting.

Why is there a day dedicated to vitamin D? After all there are a whole host of vitamins that supplement your body with the shortcomings of your diet!

    What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins our body needs and can affect our entire body if levels drop too low.

What most people don't know is that vitamin D is actually not a vitamin but more of a hormone. when our vitamin D levels are low we become tired and our energy levels drop. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption this is needed for bone growth and bone remodeling. Insufficient levels of vitamin D can promote bones to become thin, brittle or misshapen.

    Are you vitamin D deficient?

Other than the general symptoms like tiredness bone pain, muscle pain, brittle bones and a decrease in energy there really is only one other way that you can determine whether you lack vitamin D and that is a blood test at your local doctors, this will be able to tell you what your vitamin D levels are at. If they are below 30 it means that you are lacking in vitamin D. The average range for men and women should be anything between 40 and 50 but anything over 30 is considered okay.

What are the benefits of taking vitamin D?

There are many different benefits of taking vitamin D. One of the main benefit is that vitamin D helps your body build calcium and calcium helps strengthen your bones and teeth. Vitamin D can help lower blood pressure and regulate your immune system, by regulating your immune system you have a better chance of fighting off diseases. Also vitamin D can decrease the risk of Osteoporosis, Heart disease, Dementia, Diabetes and also some Cancers.

Where can you find vitamin D?

This fat soluble vitamin can be found present in very few foods! But can be added to the diet via supplements. The best food sources for vitamin D would be most oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, some powdered milk can contain vitamin D, eggs, most fortified fat spreads and breakfast cereals can contain vitamin D. A lot of people think the main source of vitamin D is cows milk, unfortunately this is not always correct as in the UK cows milk is not fortified which means that it is largely lost with the removal of the milk fat as vitamin D is fat soluble.

One of the main ways of obtaining vitamin D is from sun exposure, Ultraviolet rays from the sun strike the skin they can trigger vitamin D synthesis.

How to get vitamin D in winter?

In the UK, there are many people who have a vitamin D deficiency. We have a poor climate for which in winter it is very difficult to absorb the required amount of UV light to generate vitamin D. In our opinion, the best way to fill the void in vitamin D levels is to take vitamin D tablets to supplement your diet.

How much vitamin D should I have?

This is fairly easy, most people have all the vitamin D they need, all they have to do is eat the right food sources by maintaining a healthy balanced diet and let's not forget the best way to obtain vitamin D, the sun! There is certain groups of the population that can be at risk of being vitamin D deficient, these are pregnant and breastfeeding woman, people over age of 65,  people who have darker skin, babies and children under the age of 5 and people who are not exposed to enough ultraviolet rays from the sun! All these groups can "top up" vitamin D intake via supplements.

Can you take too much vitamin D?

Yes you can, if you are taking a vitamin D supplement over a long period of time it can cause a build up of calcium that can be deposited into the kidneys and therefor cause damage. Also too much vitamin D intake can actually encourage calcium to be removed from your bones making them soft and weak. If you need to supplement your vitamin D intake you should take no more than 25 micro grams per day.

Should I take vitamin D tablets?

Personally, I do supplement my diet with vitamin D. I work long hours, i spend too much time in front of a computer and I exercise. My diet is as healthy as I am able to manage, however I am aware that my diet does not cover all requirements of a vitamin intake. Due to the fact that I use weights as part of my exercise routine, I also am aware that vitamin D helps my body absorb calcium which is essential. Your diet and routine may be very different to mine and again, I can not stress how important it is to ask your GP prior to taking supplements, after all the advice does not cost you a penny! Ultimately, the choice is yours. There are varied strengths of vitamin D available for which you can make an informed decision based on your individual circumstances.

Of course we offer a variety of vitamin D products for you to chose from. The customers that have purchased from our range of vitamin D tablets re-order on a monthly basis based on our expert, honest advice and quality of product of service.

  • Glucosamine And Chondroitin For Healthy Joints

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Glucosamins And Chondroitin for Joint Support

    Exercise and your joints

From a young age, our joints withstand immense forces for which your body is well equipped to adapt and repair should you have the misfortune of a joint injury. There are situations where joints and tendons need support. Heavy exercise through sports and frequent visits to the gym, and also growing old are the main reason that joints and tendons can start to become painful.

How does our body support the joints?

The natural compounds that the body produces to promote healthy strong joints are Glucosamine and Chondroitin and these are known as chondroprotective agents which support the joint fluids and lubricate the joints. They also help to combat harmful free radical enzymes both of which can damage joint cartilage. Chondroitin and Glucosamine also help to enhance blood circulation.

    What is Glucosamine Sulphate?

Glucosamine suphate is a key building block of cartilage that is derived from the sugar glucose, the main sugar found circulating in the blood stream. Glucosamine is concentrated in joint cartilage and stimulates chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to help maintain cartilage and collagen. It enters the joint space and is incorporated into proteoglycans. These are cells that form large structures and attract water to the joint space for lubrication of cartilage during movement.

    Chondroitin Sulphate & cartilage

Chondroitin sulphate is the natural component of human cartilage composed of a long chain of specialised sugars. It supports the structural components of joint cartilage giving it hydration and that leads to improved mobility of the joint. The cartilage does not have a blood supply to promote hydration of the joint for improved mobility, therefore Chondroitin channels nutrients to the cartilage cells.

    Glucosamine And Chondroitin Benefits

The benefits of Glucosamine and Chondroitin are vast for both the young and old alike. Glucosamine and Chondroitin benefits include reducing the degradation of connective tissues in diseased joints, including pain, inflammation, stiffness, weakness, and poor flexibility.

Include Glucosamine And Chondroitin in your daily nutrition plan?

  • High Protein Intake From Bugs!

    Protein From Bugs

    Why Eat Bugs?

The very reason that you are reading this article is most probably the title! Something that you have not considered before, well why would you after all?! A spider crawling along your gym wall hardly inspires the the pallet to water and the brain to send the electrical signal to eat the 8 legged critter! Nearly 80% of the world's cultures amounting to 2 billion people indulge in a nutritious meal of insects as part of the daily diet. So why in the UK and USA are we so different? Conditioning through produce marketing plays a big role and also the perception handed down by default from generation to generation that bugs are pests and commonly associated with disease.

    How do you eat bugs?

Most reading this article will have seen by now insects on sticks photographed in various countries that see the insect snack as the norm. It is quite normal to munch and crunch the legs, eyeballs and all remaining body parts to crunch with every bite. One can only imagine that in this country, we have steered too far in the opposite direction with the thought of an insect snack on a stick becoming a niche industry for those who wish to fulfill curiosity and indulge on the basis of novelty. The others, well I expect that a few dares among friends will set the scene!

    Nutrition From Bugs

The reality is that insects are a very valid food source that produce a significant lesser amount of greenhouse gasses than livestock. It is in fact 20 times more efficient to raise insect protein than beef.

So in reality, in this country, how can the average person capitalise on high protein, insect food sources? We have to think out of the box and more in a commercial way, apply the marketing principle to the insect! After all i doubt a chicken would be eaten cooked with head and feet still attached on a stick! The answer? Crickets! Crickets are 70% in protein by weight and can be ground in to fine protein rich flour to bake with. Yes, you read that right, you can actually buy cricket flour. The very image in my head of a white flour in a bag that happens to be made from crickets does not phase me in the slightest. The very fact that this has now become a 'product' psychologically has made my brain change the whole perception of what it is that I am to be putting into my body. This could be as the safety box has been ticked to say that this is a processed food, or it may be that the visual aspects of the meal have changed! No unknowns to deal with, flour is a tried and tested substance that I am comfortable with!

    Cook With Bugs

Ok, now we have flour! Remove the 'insect' variable and what we actually have is a flour that is extremely high in protein and the doors of possibility are wide open as flour is designed to bake with. Protein bread, protein cake, protein biscuits & protein pizza - need I go on? All of a sudden the doors have opened where you are able to bake with a product that does not contain whey and full of nutrition.

    Bugs As Snacks

Now the baking is covered lets look at snacks. One of the most tasty of bugs is without a doubt meal worms. Picture this, you have been to the gym, work has finished and you pick up your bag of crisps, however you change your mind, to the right of the crisps on your shelf is a packet of meal worms. You sit down, open the packet of meal worms and you start the movie. Whats next, do you eat the worms? Absolutely! Believe it or not roasted meal worms taste like rice crispies (with a slight roasted taste). Add some garlic to the bag and you will finish the bag off without stopping guaranteed as mealworms are that moreish! The taste of meal worms are absolutely delicious and also make a fantastic complement to the croutons on your salad, offering a consistency similar to crispy onions. 100 grams of roasted meal worms will give you roughly 55g of protein. Now compare this to the bag of crisps that you planned to have with almost no nutritional value! Which would you prefer? Can mealwoms be ground into flour / powder? I am pleased to say yes! Mealworm powder can be used to cook with or make protein shakes.

Bugs As Part Of Your High Protein Diet?

Certainly I would put crickets and mealworms forward as a viable introduction to your high protein diet. A selection of protein variant offers your body different possibilities for which you are able to recover more effectively from the gym or just improve your diet and health if you have a different body goal.

Without protein shakes your body goal would be much more difficult to achieve based on the fact that you would need to eat large amounts of 'real foods' to achieve the required quantity of protein for your body.

To give the shake flavour, additives are added to make the protein shake taste more appealing. The flavours available off the shelf are limited and can become boring over a length of time. • Know everything about Peanut Butter? Are you sure?!!!

All Natural Peanut Butter Spread All Natural Peanut Butter Spread

Most reading this by know will have overheard a discussion or received a recommendation to inject peanut butter back into your life. A spread, and not just any spread, it contains the forbidden word 'butter'! So why the hype, why is it that so many years after your last peanut butter sandwich wrapped neatly in clingfilm packed by a loved one for a school trip, has it suddenly become a significance as part of our daily diet?

Lets start with how you currently obtain energy, fiber, vitamins and protein. I would edge a bet that I wouldn't be too far off the mark in suggesting that the majority of your main requirements for essential nutrients enter your body in the form of at least one of the following: Protein shakes, protein bars, energy bars, weight gain shakes & vitamin tablets etc. Essentially space food! Ok, so now the nutrients box is ticked! Anybody with a sensible strategic approach to achieve their body goal will now have a 'real food' diet plan. This may be strict to the gram or generally a diet that consists of the right foods to help you maximize effect, this will depend on how serious you are. Peanut butter is all about real food intake. Although peanut butter contains a high level of calories, it is actually one of the best foods I know of for dieting, sports and body building.

    Peanut Butter and Weight Loss!

Any healthy spread that contains nuts brings fiber and protein combined to the table. When fighting hunger as part of a diet program, you are most likely not eating efficiently. By ingesting food that contains fiber and protein, such as peanut butter, or just nuts, you are going to feel fuller for longer periods of time which reduces the requirement or urge to snack.

A Perdue University study reports subjects who ate peanuts every day did not overeat daily calories. (Kirkmeyer, Int'l J Obesity 24:1167, 2000) Peanut eaters tend to naturally eat less at other times of the day. (Alper, Int'l J Obesity 26:1129, 2002)

Can Peanut Butter Reduce Heart Disease?

Whilst it is impossible to state that this is the case, it is proven that nuts are a fantastic food to help reduce bad cholesterol not to mention that nuts have lots of protein, fiber, healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants!

Peanut Butter Can Save You Money!

Calories can be expensive! Anybody that has a bodily demand of 3000+ calories per day will know maintaining the level of intake through weight gain shakes, protein shakes and all the other supplement channels, can start to take its toll on your bank balance! This is where peanut butter leads the way. 400 calories of peanut butter will cost you roughly £0.20. Now compare this cost to 2 X energy bars totaling 400 calories costing a total of £1.90.

This principle also extends to the real foods. Lets take a look at cottage cheese for example £1.40 / 400 calories. Tuna average cost is £1.52 / 400 calories, finally turkey breast will set you back £1.92 / 400 calories.

Although peanut butter is not high in protein, it still contains viable quantities!

Everybody knows that you need protein to repair your body. A consistent intake of protein is mission critical if you are to achieve your body goal. You only need 2 tablespoons of peanut butter to ingest 7 grams of valuable protein. So how do you achieve the level of protein to make up the quantities required for your increased dietary intake? Simply have a tall glass of low fat milk with a peanut butter sandwich and you will have not only a tasty filling meal, but combined the total protein intake will be roughly 28 grams of protein! From this healthy meal packed with nutrients you are also receiving a good balanced combination of amino acids.

If you need to top up the fiber in your diet, peanut butter contains 1 gram per tablespoon.

Fiber is essential to ensure that you feel full on a continual basis. Fiber can help you eat less by reducing hunger signals from your brain. By eating a good quantity of fiber (roughly 20 - 35 grams per day) you will help your body maintain regular bowel movements. A sandwich consisting of wholegrain bread and peanut butter will offer your body roughly 6 to 8 grams of fiber which is a good start towards your daily recommended intake (20 - 35 grams).

Are there different types of peanut butter?

Natural Peanut ButterThe answer is yes! More recognised brands of peanut butter usually consist of hardened oil which is named trans-fat. Trans fat is an oil that is converted into a fat to prevent the oil from separating and sitting at the top of the peanut butter jar. Body Goal always recommend that you purchase natural peanut butter. All natural peanut butter usually will contain a layer of oil on the surface for which if this puts you off, a good tip is to simply store the jar of peanut butter upside down. This ensures that when the jar is opened the correct way up, the oil is actually sat at the bottom!

What about the all important carbohydrates? Does peanut butter contain carbohydrates?

It is never a healthy option to simply eat one food source to sustain nutrition. Peanut butter is actually not a fantastic source of carbohydrates. The idea is to vary your intake of real foods. You need to ingest a balanced diet focused on supporting your body goal. Natural peanut butter should become a standard within your diet and try to be eaten at least once per day unless you have medical advice not to. It is a sustainable, affordable real food which can be included within your diet to build a healthy varied meal plan for maximum effect.

Hopefully this article has helped remove any doubts about the benefits of peanut butter for you. If you found this article useful, please help us spread the word by socially sharing and clicking one of the below share boxes.

  • Gluten Free Food Facts That You Need To Know!

    What is Gluten?

Gluten is a mixture of two proteins present in cereal grains, especially wheat, which is responsible for the elastic texture of dough.

Gluten is the name of the composite protein present in wheat, rye and barley and their various cross-breeds. Millions of people suffer from a negative reaction to gluten, including those suffering from coeliac disease.

Foods that contain gluten include bread and baked goods, pizza, french fries, pasta, soups, sauces and some vitamins, supplements and medications.

    Gluten Free Food

    Where does Gluten Come From?

The Big 4: Wheat, Barley, Rye & Triticale.

    Wheat is commonly found in:

    1. Breads
    2. Baked goods
    3. Soups
    4. Pasta
    5. Cereals
    6. Sauces

    1. Breads
    2. Pasta
    3. Cereals

    Gluten Intolerance

A gluten intolerance can make life very uncomfortable for most and those who have a gluten intolerance will have at some point searched google for - 'gluten free restaurant near me' or 'gluten free food near me'. This is because gluten free food is not a standard in society and ranges of gluten free food on the menu are usually limited to a select few dishes. The good news is that you can add variety to your gluten free diet by ordering gluten free food online. If your taste buds are screaming out for new flavor and contrast, make your own dishes at home. There are many gluten free products available to buy online and when purchased from, also offer very good value for money.

    Are you Gluten intolerant?

You don’t need to have full-blown coeliac disease to have an adverse reaction to gluten.

There is another disorder called gluten intolerance, which is much more common.

Although there is no clear definition of gluten sensitivity, it basically means having some sort of adverse reaction to gluten and an improvement in symptoms on a gluten-free diet.

    Getting Tested for Coeliac Disease

If you suspect you have Coeliac disease you should discuss it with your GP. The chances are that this is something that you have considered before, especially if you have bloating, stomach discomfort after eating and bowel problems. You might also struggle to keep weight on and may be fatigued and tired all the time as you are not absorbing your food properly and may also be lacking in various vitamins and minerals. Your GP will organise the relevant tests if he thinks they are necessary.

    Gluten Free Foods

Nothing can assumed to be totally gluten free. Recipes changes, ingredients change.  It is always best to double check what you are buying and eating. Remember that "wheat-free" does not automatically mean "gluten-free." While a product may not contain wheat, it can still contain rye or barley in some form.

If you have any question about whether a food contains gluten, contact the manufacturer directly.

    Hidden/Unexpected Gluten

You may not expect it, but the following foods can also contain gluten:

    1. Broth in soups and bouillon cubes

    5. Imitation fish
    6. Some lunch meats and hot dogs
    7. Modified food starch
    8. Seasoned chips and other seasoned snack foods
    9. Salad dressings
    10. Self-basting turkey
    11. Soy sauce
    12. Seasoned rice and pasta mixes

Pure oats are a gluten-free food, but most commercially processed oats have been contaminated during the growing, harvesting or processing stages. In the past, many experts recommended completely avoiding oats those on a gluten-free diet in addition to wheat, barley, and rye. Now, some oats are grown and processed separately, and can be labeled "gluten-free."

Many people with Coeliac disease are still advised to avoid oats initially. However, oats can help provide fibre and other important nutrients. Over time, most people with Coeliac disease can reintroduce pure oats in small amounts (about 1/2 cup of dry oats per day) without any trouble.

If you do choose to include them, let your doctor know and only eat oats that are marked "gluten-free".

The good news is that most foods that help with our cardiovascular health are also fat burning superstars. A great replacement food for unhealthy fats are nuts. Nuts are also a great source of protein, and make an amazing healthy substitute for those fatty, sugary snacks which pile on the weight!

Nuts have saturated and monounsaturated fats in them that help fill you up and boost your energy. These type of fats also are known the help cut down belly fat and bad cholesterol. If you are trying to be super heart healthy you can get unsalted ones from most health food stores. You should look for ‘raw’ varieties of nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews – they shouldn’t be roasted, sweetened or salted. It has been proven that as little as 5 walnuts per day can and will improve your heart health.

All nuts are about equal in terms of calorific value per ounce, and in moderation, are all healthy additions to any diet. As well as a great source of fibre they also contain omega-3 fatty acids and protein which will also help you feel less hungry and fill you up.

Portion control is important regardless of what you eat and keeping nuts a healthy snack and not an over-indulgent one is important to recognise. Nuts are packed with calories due to how much energy they do offer us so incorporate them in your diet in a healthy way eating only a small handful a day. Lose weight with Milk

Drink milk to help get a flat belly! Its recommended that on average women consume 1000 mg of calcium a day. While we all can and should take calcium to avoid problems like osteoporosis, it is best absorbed if we include it in foods we eat. A great way to get calcium is through dairy products, and dairy products can be a fat burning power food.

Yogurt and milk are the best way to get the calcium that we need. For fat burning purposes we highly recommend incorporating milk into your diet. A 2010 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study discovered that drinking milk can double weight loss efforts. Milk actually helps break down stomach fat and interrupt the formation of fat. To get the most benefit out of the vitamins and fat burning properties of milk we recommend drinking 1% milk. Skimmed milk is frequently robbed of its nutrients and the healthy fats that milk has but dont forget higher fat percentage milks obviously have a higher fat content.

Try adding milk to a bowl of granola or oatmeal, or making a delicious smoothie by adding fruits and yogurt to milk and giving it a few seconds in your food blender. You can also have a tiny bit of natural chocolate syrup in your glass of milk for a delicious treat. Replace that sugary drink you have with lunch or dinner with a glass of milk instead!

  • How To Lose Weight Fast With Apple Cider Vinegar

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar With Mother

Everybody wants to know how to lose weight quickly!

The fact is that weight loss is not achieved by excessive exercise and fasting! There is a science behind weight loss and losing weight quickly that can only be achieved by a correct balance of exercise and diet.

First of all, change your diet! It is the key and the term "you are what you eat" has substance! To have enough energy to break down your food into energy and exercise, first of all you have to eat. So what do you eat? Everything pure! It is that simple. Take any prepackaged food out of your fridge and walk straight to the bin. You need to start considering that the nutrients in prepackaged food is usually much lower than raw food such as carrots, spinach etc. This will mean that you have to eat twice as much for your body to ingest the correct nutrients to absorb into your body. This also ingest twice as much as the emulsifiers and fats that are used to bulk the food out.

A Good Test To See Fat Difference

I am going to use a fat filled product to give you an example of the difference between processed packaged food and pure direct from the source food which is based on experience.

Go to your local supermarket and buy either a package of sausages or a package of beef burgers. Now, go to your local butcher and do the same, ensuring that the product type matches (2 packs of sausages for example). Now take each and place in to two separate pans. At this point I am guessing you know the outcome right? Well yes, you would be right in saying the supermarket sausages will most likely loose fat and there will be less from the butchers. The point is, you need to do this exercise to see just how much fat comes out. The supermarket pan was swimming in fat, the butchers sausages literally had none.

How does Fat and Apple Cider Vinegar Connect?

As stated above, weight loss is about the correct diet and not just having a starvation routine. The right diet is important, however the fact is that it is very hard to combine meals that have the right balance of nutrients and fat. Apple cider bridges this gap! As long as you are prepared to eat as healthy as possible, apple cider vinegar has ingredients that help your body digest food more effectively and also increase iron levels to help burn energy within your body. There are certain products that are natural and act as a catalyst such as Apple Cider Vinegar which work, plain and simple!

How Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help Me Lose Weight?

Acids can help with digestion of protein which are the building blocks for some of the hormones within our body, mainly the growth hormone. Our growth hormone can be very effective in breaking down your fat cells. The increased levels of acid from the apple cider vinegar within your stomach will help maximise efficiency of digestion and increase protein levels to enable hormone synthesis.

The best time to use apple cider vinegar is before bed or with your evening meal as the increased protein helps synthesis the growth hormone and maintain the body's metabolism whilst sleeping.

Apple cider vinegar stimulates digestion and significantly reduces the period of time that fat remains within the digestive tract. If there are less fats sat within your digestive system, your body is able to more efficiently digest the key nutrients to help you lose weight quickly and maintain a good level of nutrition. Also the longer fats remain within your digestive system, the more chance you body has of absorbing into your body.

Iron a key component of your body to help carry oxygen to the cells and maintain the levels of oxygen for as long as possible. Certain acids within the apple cider vinegar such as acetic acid help release iron from food and the iron available to be a building block for oxygen-carrying hemoglobin and oxygen attracting myoglobin. Iron is critical if you want to lose weight quickly as it is essential for burning energy such as stored energy (Fat).
